53rd Grammy Award-Winners, surprise? Hell no! Maybe this is a wake up call not only for the "promised land" that is United States, but also for all of the countries that considers music as part of their lives. And yes you got it right! Pinas included! Be awaken my fellow countrymen!!!

Yeah probably the biggest surprise of them all is the controversial best new artist victor: Esperanza Spalding (over Justin Beiber).

This isn't about ravish packaging like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, or the insane popularity of Justin Beiber. It's about true music. Yes, true music!

Its a big debate everywhere about Spalding's win over Beiber. Others even claim Spalding doesn't exist. But what the hell. Grammy is not a popularity-based award giving body, my friends. Let me reiterate that the category being talked about is BEST NEW ARTIST! And not MOST POPULAR ARTIST. They saw Spalding's potential to deliver high quality of music. Not that commercially sustainable, but of eminent calibre.

To be fair and to preserve the integrity of this post, yes I am a jazz lover, which is Spalding's genre. I am a fan of Esperanza Spalding. But hey, this is way beyond the artist per se. This is about what music is. True music!

It is very obvious that this equates the Pinas' music scene. If you're not the "masa" type, sorry, you are not the right fit. The absurdity that is K-Pop, the flock of revivals in the radio, the dissolution of some of the good bands that we have, Willie Revillame topping the sales chart of record bars, having Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera just next to Willie. Altogether now, "What The Fuck?!"

Why does "masa" and revivals heap radiowaves? Its because artists are afraid to try something new. Why is that? Because people seldomly embrace what is new. Why radio stations does not play these "originals"? Its because listeners might veer away. "Masa" and revival songs have much more appeal than origs (also known as the NU 107 demise). Its all about the "profit", the "money". And it's sad.

A lot of times I try to say to everyone that in the underground music scene, in the indie scene, there are so much "undiscovered" talents. Talents that speaks of true musicality. Talents that are the artistic epitome of the word SUBSTANCE. And up to this day I still speak of such. Try to see beyond the popularity that an artist have. Look for the kind of musicality these people can really offer to you. Do not just have a shallow acceptance of what is popular but have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the music itself.

Sometimes, the people that appreciates good music that came from our land, are those persons who were not born in our land. One time, I had my French friend listen to some of my OPM collection, most of it came from indie bands and of jazz and bossa genre. He liked it very much and was surprised about the Pinoy musicality that he had known. He even asked me for a list of those songs and it's artists, before he went home to France so he can purchase it. And he is looking forward on meeting these artists when he comes to the Philippines someday.

Let me quote one of SinoSiKat's song "Mr. Musikero": "Di ba ninyo napapansin, kayraming nag-hit na tugtugin, tipid na tipid sa areglo, madlang pinoy kailan ba magbabago, ang taste ninyo, Mr. Musikero, ang pag-asa nila ay nasayo..."
